Style savoir faire at Cannes

May 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Critics have been quick to slate the Cannes Film festival this year, blaming the credit crunch for a noticeably quieter festival this year.  Major studios have been reluctant to attend, and even the ubiquitous celebrities and reporters have been slightly thin on the ground.  Vanity Fair magazine even went so far as to cancel their Cannes party – usually the social highlight of the season and the best place for both star and style spotting.  Yet recession or not, Hollywood always likes any excuse for a party and the chance to show off.  Cannes is the place for both up-and-coming and established actors to get themselves noticed, and the stars have still been putting their best designer wares on and hitting the parties in style.  Nicola Paul takes a look at some of the best red carpet fashion on the French Riviera so far.

However, it seems that some of the stars have been keeping themselves busy elsewhere too.  T4 eye-candy Steve Jones has been spotted out and about with new love interest Hayden Panettiere from Heroes.  Ah, it’s a hard life being famous…

Two of the high streets top retailers are going into a head-on battle today as they simultaneously launch designer collaborations.

Matthew Williamson’s hotly anticipated summer range for H&M hits the shops today, while Giles Deacon’s seventh collection for New Look is also now up for grabs.

Shoppers were already queuing outside H&M’s flagship London store at 6.30am this morning, and both collections look set to sell out fast.

Williamson’s range has already been sported by numerous celebrity fans, including Katie Perry, Nicky Hilton and Ginnifer Goodwin.  Deacon meanwhile is already riding high from his previous collections’ successes.

These ranges are the latest in a long line of celebrity-high street collaborations, and the trend looks set to continue with lines from Zandra Rhodes at M&S, Beth Ditto at Evans and Yasmin Le Bon at Wallis set to follow in the coming months.  Men aren’t being left out though – Liam Gallagher is launching his own version of Brit-pop fashion with a collection called Pretty Green.

You can buy Giles Deacon’s range online at http://www.newlook.co.uk/women/gold_giles_deacon/ProductList.aspx, while you’ll need to head to the shops to get hold of Matthew Williamson’s range.
