The Wonderous Meryl Streep

December 18, 2009 by

So who is the biggest box office queen? Here’s a hint, she’s pushing 60 and is about to be on our screens in…wait for it….A ROMANTIC LEAD!!!!! She is of course the incomparable Meryl Streep!

She has a Hollywood career spanning 30 years and has been one of the biggest box office earners in recent years. Meryl Streep defies the rule that female actresses don’t have a career past 40, with one of her biggest successes in recent years (Mama Mia) Meryl Streep has tore down the common perceptions and is in the highlight of her career in her 60′s!

In her new movie It’s Complicated Streep stars as divorcee who is drawn back into a relationship with her ex-husband, played by Alec Baldwin, who left her for a younger woman.

The film has already recieved rave reviews state side so we will just need to wait and see how much more mileage Streep has….something tells me she’s not going anywhere yet!

The Wonder of Wicked

We’ve all seen the film classic The Wizard of Oz, well this theatre production brings a new perspective to the Wicked witch of the west with the Broadway and West End smash that is Wicked.

The story of the years before Dorothy crashed into munchkinland rudely landing her house on the Wicked witch of the East. We follow the green witch Elphaba in her teen years, we learn how she is subjected to horrible discrimination from her family and class mates for her emerald coloured skin. We meet the precious and massively spoiled Galinda (before she changes her name to Glinda the good) who is horrified to have to share a room with the green witch. The tale unfolds as these two unlikely friends grow ever closer. [Read more]

Alice in Wonderland

Burton’s Wonder World

So anyone who has had to suffer me go on and on and on and on about the movies and directors I love, will have no doubt heard Tim Burton come up in conversation.

The mastermind behind Sweeney Todd, Beetlejuice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands has turned his attention to a revisioning of Aice in Wonderland.

As to be expected of a Burton movie it pairs his wife ( Bonham-Carter) and muse (Depp) in lead roles.

Although it’s not out in the cinema till next March I can gaurantee I’ll be first in line to see it! LOVES IT!

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus

Hmmm

So…I was really looking forward to seeing this movie (those of you who were in the pub with me before it know how much I was looking forward to it), but I’ve got to say, I don’t know what to make of it!

Obviously the main reason to see it was to witness the final work of the late Heath Ledger, but I felt a bit too much of the story was left for the viewer to make up for themselves.

The story revolves around the films namesake, Doctor Parnasus, a centuries old monk who gambles with the devil to see who can win the most souls, with Parnasus even gambling with his daughters freedom in order to and win. Parnasus and his crew of misfits travel around London in a cart, scraping a living, trying to survive, when they come across Ledger’s character Tony, a mystery man , who comes on the scene and upsets the balance for all involved.

It was set in the present day which really threw me, the adverts suggested an older time period. It was a true spectacle though, true to his reputation Terry Gilliam made use of every corner of the screen with masterful visual effects and use of  colour and decadence. But I felt it was a bit abstract. [Read more]
