Striking lorry drivers

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

One month ago there was a  strike that created a general stoppage of trade, blocking  traffic and the arrival of fresh fruit and vegetables in all supermarkets for two long days. All wholesale dealers, suppliers, supermarkets and petrol pump attendants were involved in the protest. The strike of the HGV drivers has caused the stoppage of traffic on roads, blocking the arrival of the fresh food especially from the south of Italy: tomato, oranges, aubergines and peppers. It caused many problems for traffic and our daily lives. All the warehouses were empty because many supermarkets were bombarded by many people that had to buy the fresh food remaining. It involved all the regions of Italy, but Sicily suffered most damage. The crisis also concerned petrol pumps. In fact the danger, and what actually happened,  was that people have besieged the pumps because they were looking for food and they were moving from supermarket to supermarket. In this way fuel finished too.
I think that this event was one of the many consequences of bad management of the economy and of bad administration of our country! People make their displeasure felt and demonstrate their discontent through strikes.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN FOR SICILY HAS BEEN COPIED!

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Legambiente, a non-profit organization for the defence of nature, complained that the environmental plan for Sicily has been copied from the Veneto plan. Some environmental directors for Sicily, P.Tolomeo and S.Anzà, seem to have copied the content of the plan from another regional plan, that of Venice, referring to maps, problems and measures that don’t reflect the regional reality. The regional councillor, who firmed the subsequent decree, denies that the plan has been copied, but in fact there are also reported some misprints and links, which would appear to prove the misdeed. For the writing (or, better, the copying) of the plan more than 75,000 €  has been paid to the Universities of Palermo and Messina, Arpa, and other technicians. Furthermore, the original Veneto plan hadn’t even been approved by EU commission because of the lack of emission measurements. This is a real scandal that must be punished!

La consegna dei libri

The consignment of fifteen boxes of books took place in the courtyard of the Law Faculty in a ceremony attended by the vice-chancellor for International Relations Roberto Grandi and  a representative of the armed forces.

Stefano Canestrari, Dean of the Law faculty, said: “We believe that the widening of educational opportunities plays a  fundamental role in growth and development.  We are therefore especially happy to have made this contribution. It is an achievement we are very proud of”.  Professor Gianni Cimbalo, who teaches in the faculty and who promoted this initiative, added, “It has been a real pleasure for us to be able to hand over these books. We hope that it is just the beginning of a lasting collaboration with the University di Pristina and with the Carabinieri.”

The delivery of the volumes, which will be enhancing the library catalogue of the Law Faculty in  Pristina, was organised with the help of Tenente Colonnello Alessandro Bellia, commander of the Italian troops in Kosovo. The cultural participation of the University of Bologna in former Jugoslavia is also actively promoted by means of formal collaboration agreements signed not only with the University of Pristina, but also with the University of Belgrade, in order to promote research on the subject of “Religious Freedom and Civil Rights in Eastern Europe“.
