David Mills has been sentenced to 4 years 6 months for perjury.
Yesterday, English lawyer David Mills was sentenced  to 4 years 6 months in prison for perjury in corruption trials. He will also have to pay 250.000 euro in costs and he has been banned from holding public office for 5 years.  According to the Milan judges, the 600,000 paid to Mills by Fininvest in ’98 were to bribe him to give false testimony in two trials, corruption of the Guardia di Finanza and All Iberian, both involving  Italy’s prime minister  Silvio Berlusconi.  Mr Berlusconi, Mills’ co-defendant,  was not affected by this sentence, thanks to the Alfani Law, which gives immunity from prosecution to the four chief political figures (pending a  decision of the Constitutional Court).

PS Mills’ is the brother-in-law of Dame Barbara Mills, QC.

From crooner to politician

Monday, November 28th, 2005

Beppe Grillo’s List of Italian MPs with criminal records did not go down too well with the powers that be. One of the criticisms levelled at Grillo was that politicians would “not allow themselves to be judged by a comedian“.

This is not fair. If a crooner can start a political party, and even become Prime Minister, then a comedian can express his opinions on politics.

If you want to read more about Silvio’s cruise ship crooning when he was a lad, take a look his CV . “In order to pay for his university studies, (Berlusconi) worked on Costa cruise ships, together with his buddy Fedele Confalonieri, as a singer and entertainer. Fedele on the piano and Silvio on the guitar and double bass.”

From crooner to Prime Minister “il passo è breve”, as the Italians say. Does this means that there’s not much difference between playing the fool in your spare time and acting the fool full time?
