Brit Awards Fashion – the Winners and Losers

In theory, the Brit Awards is the complete antithesis to the likes of the Oscars and the Baftas. You don’t have to show up in some generic, floor-sweeping gown, designed by Oscar de la Renta or Carolina Herrera. The Brit Awards are the perfect opportunity to rock up in a dazzling, avant-garde designer creation and wow the world with your fashion credentials.

Yet this year, the pressure was on even more than usual – Lady Gaga was always bound to outshine everyone, but still some bravely took on the challenge to better her outit choice.

Lily Allen accepted her award wearing a school-teacher’s dress and a bizarre orange wig. Not a good look, and mst try harder.

Florence Welch picked up the style pace with her dazzling silver corset dress – tops marks for her.

Then we were back in the gutter again with Cheryl Cole’s bizarre on-stage choice of a short trench coat and pants. Seriously Cheryl, we all know you have personal issues right now but that’s no excuse.

Katherine Jenkins tried to prove that she can be edgy and dress her age with a prom dress printed with a picture of the Queen. Tried – and failed.

Samantha Fox – not even going to go there. Why was she invited again?

The men clearly won out on the night – bravo to Tom Ford and Ed McFarlane of Friendly Fires for bringing a bit of dapper sophistication to the night.

And so Lady Gaga still wins in the crazy stakes – let’s face it, us Brits just can’t pull it off…

Armani Goes Gaga

I have to say, out of all the stars hitting the Grammy Awards red carpet, I never thought Lady Gaga would be hte one to be dressed in Armani Prive. The designer’s reputation for classic, demure cuts doesn’t really match too well with Lady Gaga’s outlandish personality and wacky costume choices. Yet clearly Armani decided it was time to get out of that box – and boy did he do it in style!

The lilac-silver ctructured dress he created for her really gives a new meaning to the idea of fashion as art – Gaga looked like she’d be right at home on a pedestal in a museum. It was nothing short of fantastic – if perhaps not the easiest thing to move around in. No wonder she changed for her performance later in the night – she’d have had someone’s eye out…

When Lady Gaga first appeared on the scene I thought she was fabulous. Her structural outfits, OTT eye make-up and high-leg leotards had me applauding in the backlash against all those bog standard girl-band outfits.

However I think that sadly, the tide is beginning to turn and people (myself included) are tiring of increasingly outlandish costumes and stage shows. She met the Queen earlier this week in a horrendous Victorian royal-meets-pornstar get-up that surely had Her Madjesty cringing in her seat.

Then she hit the town in a see-through rubber dress, topped off with a pair of antlers. Of course. As we all like to do on a Saturday night out. Then of course there was her appearance on Saturday’s X-Factor dressed as a giant bat, dancing in a bath tub. Yep, just a regular weekend of dressing down from Lady G…

A new fashion icon – In praise of Lady GaGa

There has been a trend of late for a look I like to call “I-just-picked-this-up-off-my-bedroom-floor-and-threw-it-on.” Alexa Chung, Peaches Geldof et al excel in that messy hair, slightly crumpled and layered style, carried off with an certain air of nonchalance.

And that’s all very well – a girl needs her scruffy days. But i think there’s a lot to be said for making a bit of an effort to scrub up a bit, especially for these famous types heading out in public. After all, what excuse have you got for not brushing your hair and wearing holey tights if you’re a celeb?

Time for a new style guru, I feel – and enter stage left Lady GaGa.

The New York singer is currently storming both the pop and fashion worlds simultaneously thanks to her love of beats, bows, brights and bejewelled creations. She said: “Fashion is everything to me. It’s just as important as the music.”

And i say praise be to her. After all, most of us are still suffering from a bit of the the February blues – we’re in need of something to lift our spirits. Now off to dig out my catsuit…
